My son was sick and so I asked him to open his mouth so I could take a look inside. It was red and swollen and then I saw it!
It was crazy looking!
It appeared to me that my son had grown a second tongue, and it reached out just like it regular one, smaller and set further back, but reached above the actual one.
So what did i do? I googled "second tongue" online.
I found some weird stuff and read some confusing stuff. I wasn't the first who had looked for this. Questions were posted and people who hadn't had experience with this tried to answer, one said "its the uvula" and thats how I knew they didn't know what was being asked. I know what a uvula is. This is not a uvula.
What it is: The Epiglottis is visible.
There are some serious conditions with an epiglottis in poor condition, so I wanted to make sure nothing was wrong with my 4 year old.
I called the pediatrician's office.
"Um, yes, I see my son's epiglottis. Does that mean something's wrong with it? I have never noticed it before."
"what does it look like"
"It looks like he has a second tongue from an alien"
"what?"
......
"I will talk to Dr. ___ and call you back"
-ten minutes later-
"Yes, Dr. ____ knew exactly what you were referring to. Apparently a few of his patients have a visible epiglottis. HAHa, I will have to ask to see next time one of them comes in. I have never heard of that! Most likely nothing is wrong, but if you are worried, you can bring him in for Dr.____ to take a look at him."
Funny thing is that both of my children are special in this way. But I am not, and neither is my husband. What are the chances!?
